I am not sure where you got that information, but quite to the contrary, Damar varnish is an excellent varnish, and from a conservation viewpoint is superior than oil-resin varnishes.

I wrote a good recipe for a non-glossy Damar varnish in the Forum:

Hello,

I have an 18th century icon which I will be putting in an Orthodox Church. The icon is in good condition and I want it to stay that way. So I want to place a varnish on the icon which will never darken and which protects well. I've heard that Demar varnish darkens the icon over time so I've ruled that out. Any suggestions?
