Workshop Notes

Shellac

Mix equal parts of Dewaxed Blonde Shellac Flakes with Denatured Alcohol (Important: This must be the anhydrous type of denatured ethyl alcohol) into jar. Close tightly with lid and let stand overnight. Stir and check to make sure the shellac has completely dissolved. Mix only enough that will be used for one or two months.

Gum Arabic

Mix a nut-sized portion of powdered Gum Arabic with your finger in a small jar with enough Distilled Water to make a thick syrupy solution. When thoroughly mixed cover it with 2 mm of water and let stand overnight. It is ready to be used to make shell gold.

The pigments were first ground in distilled water to the consistency of a soft paste, such as toothpaste, using a glass muller. The pigment paste can be stored indefinitely. Prior to painting the colors were mixed to the appropriate hue and then the egg yolk medium was added last. The egg yolk medium consists of four parts Egg Yolk to three parts of Distilled Water. Vinegar may be added to the medium only if the paint will be stored for more than one day.

The following gouache colors were also used in painting the icon: Viridian, Mars or Lamp Black, and Cadmium Red.

Picture Varnish

We do not recommend oil olipha for this type of icon painting because of the delicacy of the gold assiste, unless you are experienced in applying olipha. We recommend applying GOLDEN Archival Varnish Mineral Spirit Acrylic Aerosol. Follow the manufacturer¡¯s directions for using this product. Allow a minimum curing time of 3-6 months when used as a final picture varnish and allow the painting to become touch-dry before use as a temporary varnish. Heavy layers on fresh paint films impede the oxidation process of the egg yolk, which may result in failure. For the final picture varnish apply very light coats of gloss varnish until the surface is sealed. Then apply desired sheen layers.
