Artist's Statement
Unfortunately, icon painting and mural decoration in our time has become more and more like photocopying from famous venerated images. In the Sacred Murals Studio, we do not follow this tendency, for us the iconography is a creative and artistic work in accordance with Church canons.
In all our work, both in icon painting and fresco mural decoration, we follow the principles of medieval iconographers, who never intended to paint an exact copy from another sacred icon or fresco. For example, we know more then one hundred old icons of the Holy Mother of God of Vladimir, but none of them is an exact copy of the original icon, even if they all were supposed to be taken from the same model -- the famous Byzantine icon of Mother of God of Vladimir, now in Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
All icons and sacred mural decorations, created by the iconographers of our studio is always unique and never repeated, because every time for each concrete icon or church interior decoration we find individual solutions and create original artwork.
About the Artist
Philip Davydov is the head and art director of the Sacred Murals Studio. Philip Davydov is son of Father Andrey Davydov, world-renowned iconographer and Orthodox priest. For over 10 years, he has served as the dean of St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Pskov. Since an early age, he worked as iconographer and muralist in his father's icon-painting workshop, then founded the Sacred Murals Studio. The first time Philip participated in true fresco mural work was at the age of 16. This technique attracted him from that moment, and since then Philip always studied and practiced true fresco mural painting in his free time.
