Tour of Egypt and Christian Art

Saint Catherine's Monastery at Sinai, Egypt

Saint Catherine Monastery at Sinai

This 14-day tour planned for the fall of 2010 will visit the most important centers of Christian art (both Coptic and early Christian) in Egypt. The tour includes a tour of Old Cairo, the pharonic tour of Giza and monasteries, such as Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai and Christian churches of Cairo, Luxor and other parts of Egypt. The small group size allows us to spend time in each of the sites to discuss the history, architecture of Christianity's earliest monasteries, and the symbolism and techniques of ancient frescoes and icons.

2009 Painting Workshops

Fresco Painting Workshops

Fresco wall painting (detail) of the Resurrection in the Savior Chora Church, Istanbul, Turkey
Buon Fresco Workshops
Willits, California: July 17-19
Santa Fe, New Mexico: Fall, To be Announced

This three-day workshop is an introduction to true fresco painting, presenting both the historical and modern concepts of the painting technique. The workshop will give you the skills needed to complete a fresco painting.

The course begins with hands-on instruction on preparing and applying the plaster. The instructor will help you to prepare the fresco cartoon from a drawing, transfer it to the plaster and begin painting the image on paper. The cartoon is a color preparatory painting of the final fresco. Once finished and the plaster applied, the actual painting begins and is completed in one day. At the end of this workshop you complete a portable fresco to take home with you. The techniques learned in this workshop can be applied to wall paintings.

Students will gain basic knowledge and will have the opportunity to complete an icon and take it home. All steps will be demonstrated and explained.

Elena Voznesenskaya writes icons in the Orthodox tradition under spiritual guidance and direction of the Russian Orthodox Church. She has exhibited her work in the United States and internationally in Germany, Italy, France and England. She studied at the University Icon School of Tver, Russia and furthered her experience in iconography with other iconographers in Russia. Latest Issue of Journal: Icon Styles and
Icon Theology

Iconofile Journal Issue 7 2005Now Available. This special issue of Iconofile focuses on a concern important to all iconodules: the evolution of style of the Byzantine and Orthodox icon. Among the many styles of icons, the naturalistic icons of the Synodal period in Russia posed certain problems to a small lay group whose ideas later spawned “icon theology." From the viewpoint of icon theology, ecclesiastical art of this period is condemned as "non-canonical." This issue is 32 pages and contains full-color images of icons. Order your subscription now so that you will not miss future issues of the Journal.
