About Poplar Icon Boards
Panels for icons are usually made of solid wood, such as poplar. Solid oak keys are inserted in grooves cut into the back of each panel (recommended in boards 11 x14 in. and larger), across the wood grain, to minimize board deformation and warping. Most panels are constructed with a recessed area, called a kovcheg (Russian for ark), on the front surface of the icon. The kovcheg helps to reduce warping and spatially defines the icon's surface.
